Collection: Derivatives Study

In the financial world, a derivative is a contract that derives its value from the performance of an underlying entity—an asset, index, or interest rate. In this ongoing series, I am taking these instruments out of the textbook and onto the canvas to explore a critical question: Can the mechanics of the local stock exchange be re-engineered to serve the art world?

This body of work represents a deep dive into the architecture of financial markets. By dissecting how derivatives are utilized to hedge risk and speculate on future value, I am investigating their theoretical and practical application within the creative economy.

The goal extends beyond visual representation. This series serves as a research laboratory for finding sustainable economic models for emerging to professional art practitioners and organizations. By bridging the gap between rigorous financial theory and artistic practice, this work seeks to unlock new ways to value, protect, and grow the "underlying asset" of South African creativity
